Blue Demons Travel to Golden Bear Invitational this Weekend
CHICAGO The DePaul volleyball team heads to the Golden Bear Invitational this weekend and faces tournament host No. 5 Cal, Cal-Riverside and James Madison. The two-day tournament will be played at Cal’s Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. The tournament features three teams the Blue Demons have not faced in the program’s history. DePaul’s serves first to CU-Riverside (3-2) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CST). Saturday, DePaul opens action with a Cal (2-0) at 2 p.m. The Golden Bears, who are ranked No. 5 in this week’s AVCA Coaches Poll is the highest ranked team DePaul has ever faced. The tournament concludes at 6:30 p.m. when the Blue Demons take on James Madison (3-1). DePaul (0-2) is looking for its first win of the young season after dropping a pair of heartbreaking five-set matches to Loyola-Chicago and UIC at the Chicagoland Classic last weekend. Sophomore middle blocker Jacie Fielder was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the Blue Demons with a .310 attack percentage. Fiedler tallied 24 kills during the tournament, but it was junior Sarah Cullen who led the offense with 27 kills. The trip to California is the first for the Blue Demon volleyball program. Looking at UC-Riverside: The Highlanders opened the season 3-1 before dropping a match at No. 3 UCLA earlier this week. UC Riverside is led by Kelly Fink, who has tallied 72 kills and a .242 attack percentage. Setter Brittney Murrey runs the offense and averages 8.39 assists per game. Cal at a Glance: Tournament host Cal opened the season with a pair of 3-0 victories. Averaging a .347 team attack percentage, the Bears are led by Pac-10 Player of the Week Carli Lloyd. Last week, Lloyd averaged 11.00 assists per set, while she chipped in 1.67 digs per set and a .667 attack percentage. Noting the Dukes: James Madison enters the tournament with a 2-2 record. The Dukes are led by Michelle Johnson, who averages 3.19 kills per set and has a team-high .351 attack percentage.
