Volleyball Trumps the Purple Aces in Four
Champaign, Ill. - DePaul topped Evansville in four games (30-19, 28-30, 30-18, 30-21). A win against Evansville gave DePaul third place at the Illini Classic. The Blue Demons held the Purple Aces to a .074 hitting percentage. DePaul was able to lay down a .237 hitting percentage.
The Blue Demons came into the match with a winning attitude and it showed in game one, commanding the match from the first point. They took the game from the Purple Aces 30-19.
In game two the Blue Demons were unable to hold onto their lead and dropped the game 28-30. “As a team we lacked defense. We could not stay low and were releasing from our base position,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said.
Game three and four the Blue Demons came out with a vengeance, wanting to win the match in convincing style. They pulled away from the Purple Aces 30-18 and 30-21.
Senior Janet Cotter had an outstanding match both offensively and defensively. Cotter laid down an impressive .312 hitting percentage recording 24 kills, one solo block and four assisted blocks. She also got down on 24 digs and served two aces. “This is the level that I have wanted to see Janet at this season and I expect her to stay at that level and continue to grow as a player, Dockstader said.
Freshman Denae Gibson had a break out performance for the Blue Demons both offensively and defensively. She started every game of the match and put down four kills, one service ace and solo block, four assisted blocks and got down on seven digs. “I was pleased with her on defense and was able to count on her during rallies,” Dockstader said.
DePaul opens at home against UW- Milwaukee on Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00 pm at the DePaul Athletic Center.
