Volleyball Defeats Drake, Improves to 4-0
Milwaukee, Wis. - The DePaul volleyball team continued its winning ways with a 30-25, 21-30, 30-15, 30-27 victory over the Drake Bulldogs in the opening match of the UW-Milwaukee Invitational. The Blue Demons moved to 4-0 on the season. After falling behind 9-11 in game one, the Blue Demons ran off 10 unanswered points and never looked back winning the opening game 30-25. DePaul compiled a .308 hitting percentage with sophomore Lara Marks leading the way with seven kills. The Blue Demons dropped game two 21-30, but responded in game three by scoring 15 of the first 20 points in the game. DePaul continued to build on the lead winning 30-15. Freshman Janet Goreham appeared in her first collegiate match and contributed three of her four kills in the game. Senior Mary Anne Flanigan served the Blue Demons to a 5-0 lead in game three. The Blue Demons never relinquished the lead in the game. With the Bulldogs closing the gap to 14-11, freshman Amie West served DePaul to three unanswered points in her collegiate debut giving the Blue Demons some breathing room. DePaul then fought hard down the stretch hanging on for a 30-27 victory. "I was very pleased with the effort of our freshmen tonight," said Coach Dawn Dockstader. "We didn't execute real well, but the freshmen made up for that with their strong play. I was also pleased with the play of our middles. We talked all week how we needed a strong middle attack and we got it tonight." Marks led the Blue Demons with 14 kills while senior Stephanie Bishop added 12 kills. Senior Melissa Nordine added 8 kills and 10 digs and senior Melissa Murphy contributed 10 digs. Tomorrow DePaul faces Southeast Missouri State at 1:00 p.m. and host UW-Milwaukee at 7:00 p.m in the finale of the tournament. Dockstader said, "We need to pick it up tomorrow. Our execution has to be much better against those two teams."
