Blue Demons Down Southeast Missouri State
Milwaukee, Wis. - The volleyball Blue Demons swept Southeast Missouri State 30-23, 30-25, 30-20 in its second match of the UW-Milwaukee Invitational. DePaul now sits at 5-0 on the young season. "I'm very proud of the team and how focused they came into the match," said Coach Dawn Dockstader. "We came to the gym focused and ready to play today. After the match against Drake last night we talked about being focused and coming out with our game faces on and we did today. Last night we waited for something to happen. Today we made things happen and took control from the start." The opening game was a see-saw affair. With the Blue Demons hanging on to a slim 23-22 lead Dockstader called a time out. DePaul came out of the time out on fire reeling off seven of the game's final eight points to finish off Southeast Missouri State 30-23. Senior Christa Dirr led the Blue Demons with two solo blocks while adding three kills and two digs. In the second game, DePaul never trailed going on to win 30-25. After Southeast Missouri State cut the Blue Demon lead to 18-16, DePaul responed with four unanswered points to open the game up and never looked back. The Blue Demons completed the sweep dominating the third game 30-20. Clinging to a 9-8 lead, DePaul scored the next five points blowing the game open. Southeast Missouri State couldn't close the gap the rest of the way. Dirr finished the game with a .208 hitting percentage and seven blocks. Senior Melissa Nordine added 11 kills with 10 digs and senior Stephanie Bishop pounded 12 kills with 15 digs. Sophomore Lara Marks also finished with 12 kills. Dockstader said, "I'm very pleased with our blocking. We have been working on it a lot since we began practicing and it's nice to see all that work is finally paying off." The Blue Demons face UW-Milwaukee for the tournament championship tonight at 7:00 p.m. UW-Milwaukee is 2-0 in the tournament and 3-2 on the season.
