Volleyball vs. UW-Milwaukee Tonight



 

DePaul will take on University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee tonight at 7:00 pm at the DePaul Athletic Center.  DePaul 2-3, after participating at the Illini Classic; losing to Illinois in the opening round and defeating Evansville in their next match was able to claim 3rd place in the tournament. 

 

“My players are fired up about tonight's first home match.  We are coming out tonight to defend our home court and get another win,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said.

 

The Blue Demons had some stand out performances last weekend by senior outside hitter Janet Cotter and freshman middle Denae Gibson. 

 

Janet Cotter was unstoppable on offense and defense at the Illini Classic.  She was named to the All-Tournament team, tallying 29 kills and 37 digs.  Cotter set personal match best with 21 kills and 24 digs against Evansville.  Cotter also leads the Blue Demons in kills this season, knocking down 58 in 18 games, she averages 3.41 per game.

 

Freshman Denae Gibson had a break out performance against Evansville.  The freshman started every game of the match accumulating four kills, seven digs, one solo block and service ace, and seven assisted blocks.

 

This is the 15 time that DePaul will face UW- Milwaukee.  UWM leads the series 10-4.  The last time these two teams faced one another was September 14, 2002.  The Panthers defeated the Blue Demons in three games. In 2001, the Blue Demons

 

Taming the Panthers:

Wisconsin Milwaukee (6-0) is having its best start since the 1999 season when they opened 9-0.  They have claimed two tournament titles and landed six members of their squad on All-Tournament teams two of which were named the MVP’s of the tournament.

 

Wisconsin Milwaukee returns nine letter winners including five starters.  Key returnees for the Panthers are seniors, Lindsey Spoden, Sarah Potts, Larissa Cattanach and junior Karen Fruit.  Spoden averages 12.89 assists per game and has 13 service aces on the season.   Potts, Cattanach and Fruit lead the team in kills sharing 198 between the three of them. 

 

The Upcoming Week:

DePaul will journey to the Drake Bulldog Invitational this weekend to face Louisiana Tech, Southeast Missouri State and tournament host Drake.  The Demons will return home and be back in action on Tuesday, September 16 against Illinois-Chicago.
