Volleyball Falls to UIC in Chicagoland Classic
CHICAGO – It was everything a match with a city rival should be, tight games, a noisy crowd and an exciting match. The only downfall for the Blue Demons was that UIC came out on top of a hard-faught 3-1 (34-32, 24-30, 30-20, 30-28) decision in the opening round of the Chicagoland Classic on Friday at DePaul Athletic Center.
The loss dropped DePaul to 1-5 while the Flames improved to 2-5.
Mandy Moorberg led the Blue Demons with 21 kills while Ellen Hayes added 10 kills and 12 digs. Morgan Ingersoll added 14 kills and Maureen Zigulich chipped in with 11 digs. Mandi Caputo dished out 48 assists for the Blue Demons.
Game one was a tight see-saw battle in which the Flames were able to outlast the Blue Demons 34-32. DePaul hit .432 in the contest led by Moorberg’s nine kills. DePaul came firing right back to win game two 30-24 behind Moorberg’s seven kills.
Game three was the only contest that UIC was able to truly pull away, holding the Blue Demons to 24 points. DePaul did bounce back to push the Flames to the brink of forcing a fifth game but UIC was able to nudge to the victory with a late flurry for a 30-28 win.
DePaul is right back in action again on Saturday as it hosts the final day of the tournament. The Blue Demons host Northwestern at 2 p.m. and then face Loyola-Chicago at 7.
