Volleyball Struggles with Eastern Illinois

Eastern Illinois 3, DePaul 0

MACOMB, Ill. – The DePaul volleyball team was unable to jump start their offense as they fell to Eastern Illinois 3-0 (30-13, 30-26, 31-29) Saturday at the Pizza Hut Invitational at Western Hall.  The loss drops the Blue Demons to 1-7 on the season while the Panthers improve to 5-1.

Eastern Illinois registered a match-high .375 attack percentage while holding the Blue Demons to a -.029 attack percentage in game one.  The Panthers sprinted out to an 8-1 lead in the first game and never looked back, winning the game 30-13.  Eastern's Caitlin Balsam led the court with five kills and a .714 attack percentage.

Senior Morgan Ingersoll led the Blue Demons in game two with six kills, but it was not enough as the Panther's offense continued to find the floor and won 30-26.

The Blue Demons kept game three close, notching a match-high 14 kills.  Senior Deane Gibson led DePaul's offensive attack with five kills; but Eastern matched the Blue Demons intensity as Amy Sesol notched seven of the Panthers 16 kills. The Blue Demons opened a 15-12 lead on junior Stacy Pando's kill.  Following Pando's kill, the Panthers put together a 7-1 run to force a DePaul timeout. Eastern's offense continued to roll and extended its lead to 29-22.  With game point on the line the Blue Demons strung together seven points and forced the game into extra points.  Following a Panther timeout, Eastern took advantage of a kill and DePaul attack error to win the game and match.

Balsam led Eastern and finished the match with a double-double, 11 kills and 10 digs.  Shaina Boylan led all players with 22 digs.

Ingersoll led the Blue Demons with 11 kills, while senior Ellen Hayes and freshman Sarah Cullen each chipped in 14 digs.

The Blue Demons close out the tournament with a 5:00 p.m. match with Butler.
