Charla Drabant Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week



CHICAGO– DePaul freshman outside hitter Charla Drabant was named the BIG EAST Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Week as announced today by the league office.  The freshman set the school record for points in a match and helped the Blue Demons to four wins last week.

Drabant started out the week by posting a DePaul record for points in a match; registering 31.0 points in DePaul's 3-2 victory over Northern Illinois on Sept. 5.  Drabant 31.0 points came on 28 kills, two service aces and a pair of block assists.

 

Drabant finished out the week strong, earning All-Tournament honors after the Blue Demons won the DePaul Invitational with wins over Samford, Kennesaw State and South Alabama.  The freshman averaged a team-high 3.82 kills and 3.73 digs per game throughout the tournament.  Against Samford, Drabant notched a team season-high 27 digs. 

 

Pittsburgh outside hitter Diana Andreyko joined Drabant by earning the league's Player of the Week accolades.  Andreyko hit .309 and was the MVP of the Pittsburgh Invitational.

 

Drabant is the first DePaul player to earn Freshman of the Week since the Blue Demons became a member of the BIG EAST Conference in 2005-06.  She becomes the first volleyball player since 2004 to earn a weekly conference award.

 

The Blue Demons (4-5) return to the court this weekend at the Falcon Best Western Invitational, Sept. 14-15.  DePaul faces host Bowling Green on Friday at 6 p.m. (CST) and tangles Valparaiso and Duquesne on Saturday.
