DePaul Falls in Straight Sets to Xavier
RALEIGH, N.C. - After going a perfect 2-0 on day one of the NC State Raleigh Crabtree Valley Marriott Classic, the DePaul volleyball team dropped its first match of day two against Xavier, 3-0. The Blue Demons drop to 5-4 while the Musketeers improve to 4-5.
Xavier used a blistering .426 (38-9-68) attack percentage to tally its third straight 3-0 win of the tournament, compared to DePauls meager -.037 clip. Kate Letcher paced DePaul with just seven kills. On defense, Christy Landschoot led the team with five digs.
The Blue Demons got off to a shaky start, putting the ball away just five times in the 25-9 first stanza loss. Plagued with 11 attack errors, DePaul was forced to quickly spend two timeouts in an effort to break Xavier's momentum. Kelly Ruth terminated the final point with a kill to give the Musketeers the 1-0 advantage.
The second game looked much the same, as Xavier led from start to finish. Sarah Cullen was able to tally as respectable three kills, but attack errors continued to haunt the Blue Demons. The Musketeers launched and offensive attack consisting of 16 put aways on a .393 (16-5-28) clip. Ruth once again paced the floor with seven kills.
DePaul was able to go point-for-point with Xavier during the third stanza. After a put down from Cullen the Blue Demons threatened the Musketeer lead, behind 10-9. Xavier kept firing away, however, and extended its lead to 20-12. Kaela Jo Freppon clinched the final point with an unassisted kill.
The Musketeers now lead the all-time series with DePaul, 7-4.The Blue Demons get set for their final match of the weekend against George Mason. The first serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
