Volleyball uses Teamwork to Defeat Southeast Missouri State
DES MOINES, IA – The Blue Demons were able to pull out a convincing three game (32-30, 30-21, 30-25) victory over Southeast Missouri State at the Drake Bulldog Invitational. DePaul is now 3-5 on the season and will go for win number four this evening against tournament host Drake at 7:00 pm.
“I am pleased with the numbers that the offense and defensive put up for the match,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said. “The difference in this match was the amount of kills and digs we had compared to Southeast Missouri.”
The Blue Demons had 62 kills, knocking down a .308 hitting percentage and held Southeast Missouri State to only 34 kills and a .081 hitting percentage. They were also able to get down on 67 digs compared to Southeast Missouri’s 34.
“I was impressed with how well our setter, Amie West was able to evenly distribute the balls to our middles and outsides,” Dockstader said. The trio of Janet Cotter, Mandy Moorberg and Lara Marks put 42 balls on the wood. Cotter lead the Blue Demons with 19 kills, Moorberg added 14 and Marks followed with 10.
44 of the team’s digs were tallied by the threesome of Ellen Hayes, West and Cotter. Cotter led the Blue Demons with 18 digs, followed by West with 14 and Hayes had 12.
As a team the Blue Demons were able to block 13 balls. All of the starters had at least one assisted block. Janet Goreham led the DePaul with seven assisted blocks.
The Blue Demons came out slow, in game one allowing Southeast Missouri State to keep the game the close but Southeast was never able to take the lead and the Blue Demons won a close game 32-30.
Game two was the Moorberg show. Moorberg was on fire laying down eight kills. DePaul was able to hold the Otahkians to a -.077 hitting percentage. The Blue Demons won game two convincingly 30-21.
The Otahkians were able to tie game three at 14 all, but the Blue Demons took control of the game and won 30-25.
“I am proud of how my players regrouped after last night’s loss,” Dockstader added. “They came into this afternoon’s match with a lot of intensity. They need to bring that same intensity into tonight’s game as we face tournament host Drake.”
DePaul will be back in action tonight at 7:00 p.m. against the Drake Bulldogs.
