Moorberg, Zavitz Send DePaul Past Western Illinois in Five Games

CHICAGO – DePaul got 21 kills and 12 digs from Mandy Moorberg and fellow Normal, Ill. native Alyson Zavitz added 19 kills as DePaul rallied to beat Western Illinois 3-2 (30-25, 27-30, 28-30, 30-26, 17-15) on Tuesday at the DePaul Athletic Center.

 

The victory was DePaul’s second straight and moved the Blue Demons to 3-6 while the Westerwinds fell to 2-6.

 

Along with Moorberg and Zavitz, DePaul had 15 kills and 11 digs from Ellen Hayes while Christina Correa added 14 kills. Setter Mandi Caputo dished out 71 assists while libero Maureen Zigulich recorded 23 digs. Western Illinois got 14 kills from Ashley Baker.

 

DePaul opened the match by winning game one 30-25 with a balanced attack as Hayes, Moorberg and Correa each contributed four kills. Western Illinois returned the favor in game two with a 30-27 win despite five kills each from Moorberg and Zavitz.

 

The Westerwinds were able to rally from a four-point deficit to take game three 30-28 before the Blue Demons got back on track.

 

In game four, Zavitz responded with six kills in eight attempts with no errors (.750) and DePaul hit .341 as a team to force a fifth, and deciding, game with a 30-26 win.

 

The fifth game was a back-and-forth affair in which Western Illinois had match point but DePaul continued to come up big with Moorberg (four kills) and freshman Caitlin Callaghan who had four kills in six attacks with no errors (.667).

 

DePaul hit .314 in the game and finished game four and five hitting a combined .329 (33 kills, eight errors in 76 attempts).

 

DePaul was scheduled to compete in the New Orleans Invitational this weekend but the tournament has been cancelled due to Hurricane Katrina. The Blue Demons will next be in action on Saturday, September 24 when they play the inaugural BIG EAST Conference match against Seton Hall at the Athletic Center. Match time is 2 p.m.
