Zapryanova Leads Blue Demons Past Charleston Southern, 3-0
Sept. 13, 2013
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Vesela Zapryanova recorded her 12th career double-double to help DePaul volleyball defeat Charleston Southern, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-21), in the opening match of The Citadel Volleyball Invitational on Friday at McAlister Fieldhouse.
With the result, the Blue Demons move to 7-0 - just two victories away from tying the program record for consecutive victories to start a season - by running off their fifth sweep of the season.
CSU drops to 2-7 with the setback despite a productive day by sophomore Katrina Houston, who recorded 10 kills on a .381 attack percentage.
Zapryanova (12 kills, 10 digs) put together another well-rounded match and led all players in kills, while adding two blocks. Senior libero Allyson Rooks led the team defensively, digging 13 balls and firing two service aces to tie a season-high. Sophomore Tyler Graham also added a career-high three aces as DePaul tied a season-high with eight total.
Colleen Smith ran the show on offense, recording 27 assists and helping the team outhit CSU .263-.172.
Set one would be a tight one, featuring six tie scores and two lead changes. CSU jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the frame, before the Blue Demons responded with a 5-0 run punctuated by two Zapyranova kills. The Buccaneers crept back within three late, 18-15, when DePaul dropped another 5-0 run to all but secure the set. Kills by Randi Leath and Zapryanova finished it off, 25-18.
In the second set, DePaul maintained a lead throughout after an early 2-2 score. It was DePaul's most efficient frame, as the Blue Demons connected at a .333 clip (17-4-39). Leading 18-13, the Blue Demons ripped off four straight points to put CSU on the ropes. A Fleener kill clinched the set shortly thereafter, 25-16.
Looking to finish off the sweep, DePaul battled through another close set in the third, which featured three tie scores and three lead changes. The score was as close as 20-18 late before DePaul took four-of-five to force match point. Zapryanova, fittingly, closed out the match, 25-21, with a kill two points later.
It's a doubleheader day for DePaul at the tournament. The team will be back on the court at 3 p.m. CT to face Radford before wrapping up play tomorrow at 11 a.m. against The Citadel.
