Blue Demon Invitational Opens Friday
Chicago--The DePaul volleyball team will host the first athletic contests in the new Athletic Center September 15-16 at the Blue Demon Invitational. The tournament boasts teams from five different conferences and includes Alabama (SEC), Valparaiso (MCC), Central Michigan (MAC) and Providence (Big East).
Alabama enters the round robin invite as the unofficial top seed sporting a 6-2 record. Providence has the most wins of any of the teams in the field standing at 7-1 overall. DePaul is 5-3 with Central Michigan (2-4) and Valparaiso (2-9) rounding out the field.
The Blue Demons will look to take the experience of battling Illinois to five games this past Tuesday with them this weekend.
By pushing one of the better teams in the Big Ten to five games even after falling behind two games to none, DePaul head coach Dawn Dockstader feels the experience of competing with that caliber of team, should help dispel any doubts the Blue Demons have in their ability.
Of the teams in the tournament, only Valparaiso has crossed paths with DePaul. The two schools met at the Butler Invitational earlier this year with DePaul winning 15-5, 15-6, 15-4. DePaul holds a 14-5 record in the all-time series. This will be the inaugural meeting for the Blue Demons with each of its other opponents.
The tournament opens Friday morning with Providence facing Alabama at 10 a.m. DePaul's first match will be against Providence at 2 p.m. Friday.
