Volleyball Welcomes Three to DePaul Invitational
Sept. 15, 2011
CHICAGO – Looking to get back on track, the Blue Demons volleyball team is set to host its annual DePaul Invitational on Friday and Saturday as they welcome Valparaiso, San Diego State, and Kansas to the McGrath-Phillips Arena. DePaul will battle Valparaiso on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. following a matchup between KU and SDSU at 5 p.m.
DePaul enters the weekend looking to rebound from an 0-3 showing at the Cleveland State Tournament last weekend where the Blue Demons fell in three tough matches. After a tournament opening 3-0 loss to host Cleveland State, DePaul took on the Dukes of Duquense who, despite a comeback effort by the Blue Demons, prevailed in straight sets. In DePaul’s final match of the tournament, the Blue Demons forced IPFW to five sets where the Mastodons edged out a 15-13 deciding set win.
The first matchup for the Blue Demons in the DePaul Invitational comes against Valparaiso at 7:30 p.m. The Crusaders enter the weekend with a 7-4 record that includes a 1-2 effort last weekend at Notre Dame’s Golden Dome Invitational. Valparaiso swept Portland in its first match before falling 3-1 and 3-0 to Lipscomb and Notre Dame, respectively.
On Saturday, DePaul will open the day with an 11 a.m. contest against San Diego State. The Aztecs (4-1) have dropped just one match this season and that came on the road at Tulane where they fell in five.
The Blue Demons close out the tournament with a 7:30 p.m. match against Kansas (8-1). The match will be a “WHITE OUT” as t-shirts will be handed out to the first 100 DePaul students. The Jayhawks’ lone loss this season came in five sets at No. 15 Northern Iowa. KU did, however, defeat No. 6 Minnesota in the same tournament.
