Volleyball Improves to 8-0, Defeats UW-Green Bay

CHICAGO - It wasn't pretty, but the DePaul volleyball team got the job done defeating UW-Green Bay 30-19, 30-24, 26-30, 30-21.  The win improves the Blue Demons record to 8-0; the longest winning streak since 1991 when DePaul won eleven straight matches.

"I'm extremely proud of our young players," said Coach Dawn Dockstader.  "Goreham (freshman Janet Goreham), Cotter (sophomore Janet Cotter) and Holmes (freshman Amy Holmes) played exceptional tonight in difficult situations.  Cotter came in cold and ended up hitting .385 tonight.  These three did a great job."

The Blue Demons cruised through the first two games winning 30-19 and 30-24.  However, in the third game, DePaul ran into some trouble.  UW-Green Bay came out hot and took control of the game from the start handing the Blue Demons a 26-30 defeat.

In the fourth game, DePaul fought back with the help off the three underclassmen and the leadership of seniors Mary Anne Flanigan and Melissa Murphy, ending the match with a 30-21 victory.

Dockstader said, "Flan and Murphy did a fantastic job leading this team tonight.  They did a great job handling the team through all the substitutions.  Jakusz (senior Kara Jakusz) also showed great confidence in the young players."

Junior Katie Engel led the Blue Demons with 15 kills and 11 digs with Goreham ending up with 5 kills. Cotter pounded 7 kills and 5 digs while Holmes added 5 digs and a service ace.

DePaul travels to Milwaukee on Saturday to face Marquette in its Conference USA opener at 7:00 p.m.

"I'm encouraged we showed a lot of depth which will definitely help us in conference play," explained Dockstader.  "We're excited to face Marquette and we will practice hard the next three days to prepare for them."
