Volleyball Hosts Western Illinois
CHICAGO The DePaul volleyball team looks to rebound from its 0-3 weekend on Tuesday when it plays host to Western Illinois. The Blue Demons and Westerwinds tangle at 7 p.m. at McGrath Arena.
The Blue Demons (4-8) and Westerwinds (3-8) have each won eight matches in a series that dates back to 1982. The back-and-forth series has each team winning on their home court in recent years. Western Illinois took a 3-0 match from DePaul in Macomb in 2006, while the Blue Demons were victorious in a five-game grudge match in 2005 and won a 3-0 decision in 2004.
Against Western Illinois, DePaul senior defensive specialist Maureen Zigulich registered a career-best 23 digs in 2005. This season Zigulich has notched 94 digs which ties for the third most on the team. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Cullen leads the club with 100 digs and freshman outside hitter Charla Drabant follows with 99.Freshman libero Katherine Knutson and Zigulich each have 94.
Despite struggling at the Falcon Best Western Invitational over the weekend, DePaul freshman middle blocker Jacie Fielder was named to the All-Tournament team after tallying a team-high 30 kills for a .353 attack percentage. The freshman has been the most consistent hitter for the Blue Demons averaging a .302 hitting percentage for the season.
Fiedler and Drabant have been favorite targets for freshman setter Christy Landschoot. Landschoot, who ranks eighth in the BIG EAST Conference with 11.27 assists per game, has found Drabant for a team-high 147 kills. Fielder follows with 124 and freshman middle blocker Kate Letcher also eclipsed the 100 kill mark this season and sits with 103.
The Blue Demons begin BIG EAST play this weekend traveling to West Virginia and Pittsburgh. The Blue Demons and Mountaineers play a 6 p.m. match on Friday while DePaul clashes with the Panthers at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
