Volleyball Wins C-USA Opener
DePaul topped Marquette in an exciting five-game match at the MU Gym. DePaul ran its record to 9-0 (1-0 C-USA) with a 26-30, 32-30, 30-24, 14-30, 15-12 decision. The loss dropped MU's overall slate to 5-4.
The Demons are off to the best start in school history.
"What a way to start the conference season," DePaul head coach Dawn Docstader said. "I am very proud of the way the team showed its composure during the fifth game and came up with the win."
The match featured strong defense from both squads. Marquette finished the match with an edge in attack percentage (.175 vs. .167), digs (76 vs. 74), aces (12 vs. 1) and total team blocks (15 vs. 12), but in the decisive game 5, Marquette hit just .075.
DePaul was led by senior Chirsta Dirr with 15 kills while Melissa Nordine had 17 digs. Melissa Murphy also had 11 digs.
DePaul senior setter Kara Jakusz became C-USA's all-time leader in assists during the contest,, surpassing Liz Eagsti's total 5,180 during her Marquette career. Jakusz doled out 49 assists and now has 5,220 to her credit.
