DePaul Drops a 3-1 Decision in Regional Action
DeKALB, Ill. - Despite taking a 27-25 first-game win, and a team-total of 50 kills, the DePaul volleyball team fell to Northern Illinois 3-1. The Blue Demons fall to 6-8 overall, while the Huskies improve to 6-7.
Sarah Cullen registered 13 kills and finished the evening with a .174 (13-5-46) attack percentage, while the team finished with a .155 (50-25-161) clip. Sammy Geiger and Christy Landschoot traded setting duties and combined for 41 assists. Cullen also paced the DePaul with 16 digs.
The Blue Demons hit an impressive .333 (16-3-39) out of the gate, to take a 27-25 first-set win. While trailing much of the first half of the stanza, DePaul found themselves behind 23-19 heading into the home stretch. A series of attack errors forced NIU to spend a time out, and allowed them to regroup and set up game-point after a kill from Meagan Schoenrock.
The Blue Demons continued to prevail, however, and delivered three-straight kills- one from Molly Creek and two at the hand of Lauren Blasi- to claim the lead and set up a game-point of their own. The Huskies countered with another put away from Schoenrock, but a pair of errors would eventually give DePaul the 1-0 advantage.
The second set began much the same as the first ended, as the squads watch the score teeter-totter all the way until the 11th point. The Huskies would use a 7-2 run to take a sizeable lead, and finished the game 25-16. Allison McGlaughlin paced the floor with five kills.
After falling behind 10-5 in the third, the Blue Demons were forced to fight their way back point-by-point. Cullen's strong service allowed DePaul to tie the score at 14, before taking a 16-15 lead after Rachel Aumann drilled down a kill. Both teams had opportunities to take the 2-1 match-lead, but back-to-back kills behind McGlauglin's swing would give Northern Illinois the 25-22 win.
Although the Blue Demons and Huskies continued to trade the lead in the fourth game, DePaul could not overcome the 19 Northern Illinois put downs, and bowed out 27-25. Schoernrock accounted for a staggering nine kills while McGlughlin added six of her own.
DePaul returns to the court this weekend, when they open up BIG EAST Conference play against St. John's on Fri., Sept. 25, followed by a Sunday afternoon appointment with Connecticut,
