Sept. 23, 2013
NEW YORK - Sophomore right side Abbie Fleener picked up her first career BIG EAST Player of the Week award on Monday after leading DePaul to a fourth straight 3-0 weekend at the SIUE Cougar Invitational.
The Grand Rapids, Mich. native hit .370 in wins over SIUE, Georgia State and Arkansas Pine-Bluff en route to her second straight all-tournament nod. Fleener joins senior Vesela Zapryanova as the only two Blue Demons to ever be honored with the BIG EAST Player of the Week award.
Recording 36 kills on just nine errors over the weekend, Fleener tallied a season and match-high 18 kills in Friday's win over SIUE -- connecting at a .438 clip.
On Saturday, she finished second on the team with 11 kills and hit .333 in a morning win over Georgia State. Overall, she added three service aces and 10 digs from her right side position.
Now 12-0, the Blue Demons have officially recorded the best start in program history. The previous record belonged to the 2001 team, which began its season 9-0. DePaul also matched its win total from all of 2012 on Friday (10) and, with two sweeps on Saturday, pushed its total number of 3-0 wins up to eight - the most for the program since 2000.
The Blue Demons are riding a 14-match win streak going back to 2012, which is the second-longest win streak in program history.
Next up for DePaul is a midweek match against local rival UIC on Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Chicago, Ill.
