Zapryanova Gets Second BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll Nod
Sept. 30, 2013
NEW YORK - Senior Vesela Zapryanova picked up her second BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll award on Monday after putting up a career high-tying 22 kills at UIC and hitting .293 during a 1-1 week for the Blue Demons.
The honor is the fourth for Zapryanova in her career and second this season. DePaul has picked up at least one BIG EAST weekly award in each of the season's first five weeks.
Zapryanova lands on the honor roll after leading DePaul with 39 kills during the week.
The outside hitter landed 22 kills on Wednesday in the Blue Demons' ninth sweep of the season, helping the team to extend its school record start to 13 consecutive wins at local rival UIC. That total was the most for DePaul in a three-set match since at least 2005 and the most in a three-set match by any BIG EAST student-athlete in 2013.
On Saturday, the Sofia, Bulgaria-native finished second on the team with 17 kills as the Blue Demons fell in a dramatic 3-2 contest against Marquette. The loss snapped the second-longest winning streak in school history (15 straight wins going back to 2012).
For the season, Zapryanova ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in kills (3.78 per set) and aces (0.38 per set).
Next up for DePaul is a road match at BIG EAST rival Villanova on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. CT.
