Blue Demons Fall in Five Games

GREEN BAY, Wis.– Despite a career-high 14 kills from DePaul outside hitter, Cristina Correa, the Blue Demon volleyball team suffered a five-game loss at the hands of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Tuesday at the Phoenix Sports Center.  The win improves the Phoenix to 7-8 on the season while the Blue Demons fall to 4-14.  

For the second time this season, the Blue Demons fought to a fifth frame and came up empty.  After dropping the first game 30-21, the Blue Demons bounced back to convincingly win the second frame 30-20. 

 

In the second set, junior Stacy Pando and senior Morgan Ingersoll each hit over .300 and combined for seven of the Blue Demons' 10 kills.   After trading sideouts in the early portion of game two, the Blue Demons tied the game at 13 and closed out the game on a 17-7 run.

 

The third game mirrored the second, except it was UWGB, who went on a long run and won, 30-21.

 

With the game on the line both teams battled through the fourth frame, which saw four lead changes and 11 ties.  Tied at 22, DePaul took a 25-22 advantage on two Correa kills and a Phoenix attack error.  The Blue Demons continued to build on their lead and won 30-28.

 

The Blue Demons offense stalled in the fifth set while the Phoenix hit a match high .333.  Sarah Rauen led UWGB offense with four of their seven kills in the final set.  

 

The Phoenix's Betty Slinger and Rauen paced the court with 18 kills apiece.

 

Correa led DePaul with 14 kills. Denae Gibson chipped in10 kills and committed just one error in 19 attempts.  Senior libero Ellen Hayes paced DePaul with 18 digs, while freshman Emily McGinnis and sophomore Maureen Zigulich each chipped in 11 digs.

 

DePaul hosts its first matches of the season this weekend, welcoming Syracuse and Marquette to McGrath Arena for BIG EAST contests on October 7 and 8, respectively.

 

Notes

UW-Green Bay has won the last three meetings, but still trail in the all-time series 13-4… Cristina Correa's 14 kills ties a career-high set against Western Illinois (9/13/05)… Denae Gibson registered a season-high .474 attack percentage.
