CHICAGO –  The DePaul volleyball team welcomes Syracuse and Marquette to McGrath Arena for a pair of BIG EAST matches.  The Blue Demons, who are playing their first home matches of the season, welcome the Orange on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. match and the Golden Eagles on Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. match.

The Blue Demons (4-14, 0-3 BIG EAST) have spent the last six weekends on the road and welcome the opportunity to play on their home floor in Chicago.  Senior middle blocker Deane Gibson has stepped up for Blue Demons, leading the team with a .210 attack percentage and has finished five matches with double digit kill totals.  Gibson along with junior Stacy Pando have been giants at the net for DePaul, combining for 86 of the team 103 blocks this season.

 

Saturday's match with Syracuse (6-16, 1-3 BIG EAST) marks the fifth time the two squads have met. Last season in Syracuse, the Orange put together a 3-1 victory behind their best blocking performance of the season. However, this season Syracuse is without Katie Hayes and Kelly Duan, who combined for 32 of the Oranges 67 kills and 17 blocks assists.  Against, Syracuse Ellen Hayes led the Blue Demons with 14 kills and seven digs.

 

On Sunday, the Blue Demons welcome long-time rival Marquette (7-8, 3-1 BIG EAST) for the 45th meeting between the two-teams.  Although DePaul holds a 27-17 advantage in the series the Golden Eagles have won last five meetings.  In the team's 2005 meeting, Marquette won, 3-0 and out hit the Blue Demons .227 to .103.  Morgan Ingersoll led the Blue Demons with eight kills.

Nearing 1,000

Senior Morgan Ingersoll is nearing 1,000 career points and kills.  Entering the weekend the senior has 934.5 points (kills + service aces + blocks) and has registered 855 kills.  In her 287 career games, Ingersoll averages 2.98 kills per game and 3.26 points per game.

 

Ellen Looks for 1,300 digs

Senior Ellen Hayes is known for her aggressive defensive play, and leads the Blue Demons with 253 digs this season and ranks 10th in the BIG EAST Conference averaging 4.05 digs per game.  During Hayes' career, she averages 3.68 digs per game and enters the weekend with 1,296 career digs.  Hayes also holds the McGrath Arena record for digs in a match, registering 34 digs against Tulane on 10/18/03.

 

Morgan Mentioned

Senior Morgan Ingersoll was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll for the week of September 18.  The senior led the Blue Demons offensively during the Memphis Tournament, tallying 59 kills and a .226 attack percentage during DePaul’s four matches.  Against  Central Arkansas, Ingersoll tallied a career-high 27 kills.

 

All-Tournament Nodes

Senior Morgan Ingersoll and Caitlin Callaghan took home All-Tournament team accolades for the Blue Demons this season.  Callaghan was named to the Western Illinois all-tournament team while, Ingersoll was named to the Memphis and Rice all-tournament squads.

 

Kleyweg First

First year head coach garnered her first win against Texas-San Antonio, Saturday, September 2 at the Rice Tournament.  For the match, the Blue Demons had six players finished with double-digit dig totals and registered nine total blocks, they also notched 69 kills.

 

BIG EAST Championship

The University of Cincinnati will play host to the 2006 BIG EAST Championship at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. The top eight teams, according to league records, will participate in a single-elimination tournament to be held November 17-19.
