Blue Demons Fall to Syracuse

CHICAGOSyracuse used a season-high 67 kills in its 3-1 (30-23, 30-22, 24-30, 30-18) victory over DePaul in BIG EAST volleyball action at McGrath Arena on Saturday.  The win improves the Orange to 7-16 and 2-3 in conference play, while the Blue Demons fall to 4-15 and 0-4 in the league.

 

Despite DePaul senior Morgan Ingersoll tying a career-high 27 kills, the Blue Demons were unable to stop the Orange's aggressive hitting. Syracuse finished the match with a  .333 as a team and had four players finish with double-digit kill totals.  Outside hitter Cheryl Cobbina lead the Orange's effort with 20 kills while Kacie MacTavish chipped in 16 kills.

 

Ingersoll's dominance was  felt in the fourth set when the Blue Demons fell to a 20-18 deficit.  Ingersoll put the team on her shoulder's as she terminated seven of the Blue Demons 10 kills in the final 14 points of the game.  DePaul hit a sizzling .474 and tallied 22 kills in the third set.  Ingersoll finished the game with nine kills and a .438 attack percentage while sophomore Caitlin Callaghan chipped in five kills for a .833 hitting percentage.

 

Games one and two were all Syracuse as they hit .243 and .353, respectively.  MacTavish lead the Orange with 10 kills in the first two frames.

 

The final game saw Syracuse take an early lead and never look back, closing out the game on a 9-1 run.

 

The Blue Demons finished with a .204 attack percentage. Freshman setter Emily McGinnis dished out 41 assists and freshman Sarah Cullen was also credited with eight assists. Defensively, Ellen Hayes led DePaul with 12 digs.

 

DePaul returns to the court on Sunday to face long-time conference rival Marquette.  The first serve is schedule for 3:00 p.m. at McGrath Arena.
