Volleyball Falls to Illinois in Four Games
CHICAGO -- The Blue Demons volleyball team fell to Illinois 30-26, 30-28, 17-30, 30-28 Tuesday evening at the Athletic Center. With the loss, the Blue Demons now sit at 13-2 on the season.
After dropping two see-saw games, DePaul responded in game three. The Blue Demons ran off to an early 10-5 lead and the Illini never climbed back into the game. DePaul extended its lead to 22-11 eventually winning the game 30-17. Junior Katie Engel drilled four of her 16 kills in the game.
In the fourth game, the Blue Demons held leads of 20-17 and 21-18, but Illinois rallied, scoring 12 of the game's final 19 points finishing off the Demons and the match with a 30-28 victory. Illinois improves to 9-5 on the season.
"Our execution was good tonight," said Coach Dawn Dockstader. "A team should not hit .353 and lose. We had the momentum after game three and up to 20 points in game four and then we relaxed. You can't expect to beat anyone, especially a team like Illinois, playing like that."
DePaul hit an impressive .448 in the third game and .353 for the match. In addition to her 16 kills, Engel hit a .538. Senior Melissa Nordine finished with 13 kills and 10 digs while sophomore Lara Marks compiled 14 kills and hit a .591.
The Blue Demons next head to Cincinnati for a big conference showdown with the Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. DePaul then travels to Louisville on Saturday to face the Conference USA leading Cardinals, who are ranked 22nd in the nation, at 7:00 p.m.
