Blue Demons Fall to St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. – DePaul dropped a 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-25) BIG EAST match to St. John's Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. St. John's improves to 16-6 and 2-3 in the BIG EAST while the Blue Demons fall to 3-13 and 0-5 in conference play.

 

"Today we had a nice team effort," Dockstader said. "Although the scores indicted differently, I am please with how my team played."

 

Three Blue Demons, freshman Caitlin Callaghan, junior Morgan Ingersoll and senior Mandy Moorberg each finished with eight kills.  Middle blockers, freshman Cristina Correa and junior Deane Gibson each chipped in six kills.  Defensively, Callaghan led all players with 12 digs and freshman libero Maureen Zigulich added 10.

 

DePaul registered its best hitting percentage of the match in game one, but so did St. John's as they out hit the Blue Demons .324-.190.  The Red Storm jumped out to an early 10-6 lead and never looked back, winning game one 30-21.  Moorberg contributed four of the Blue Demons 16 kills in game one.   

 

Game two proved to be one of the tighter games of the match as the score was knotted six times and the lead exchanged hands three times.  Down 8-10, Blue Demon setter Mandi Caputo served three straight points to give DePaul an 11-10 advantage.  The Blue Demons relinquished the lead two points later as the Red Storm strung together a 10-2 run to put the game out of reach.  St. John's won game two 30-23.

 

The Blue Demons found themselves down 10-6 in game four, but rallied back to tie the game at 21.  The two teams battled back and forth, but DePaul committed five errors in the final points of the game, as St. John's won the game and the match 30-25.  Callaghan lead the Blue Demon offense with four kills.

 

Hui Ping Huang led all players with 15 kills and a .375 attack percentage. Huang also tallied three of the Red Storms 10 blocks.

 

The Blue Demons will break from conference play to host UW-Milwaukee Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m.   The weekend will bring BIG EAST foe No. 11 Notre Dame to the DePaul Athletic Center for a 2:00 p.m. match on Saturday, October 15.
