Cullen Keys Volleyball to First BIG EAST Victory of the Season
CHICAGO The DePaul volleyball team posted its first BIG EAST Conference victory of the season as it swept West Virginia 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 26-24) on Sunday at McGrath Arena.
The victory moved the Blue Demons to 2-16 overall and 1-5 in conference play while the Mountaineers fell to 6-12 and 0-6.
DePaul dominated the first two sets before having to post a big rally in set number three to win the match.
In the first set, DePaul got six kills and five digs from Sarah Cullen while Jacie Fiedler added five kills and Christy Landschoot dished out 15 assists. The Blue Demons erased a 12-11 deficit with a 5-0 run behind two kills from Fiedler and never looked back out scoring the Mountaineer s 8-4 down the stretch to win the set.
The second set was much of the same as Cullen and Fiedler led a balanced attack with three kills each while Caitlin Callaghan had five digs. With the set tied at nine, DePaul went on a 6-1 spurt to essentially put the contest away.
The third set was much tighter. The Mountaineers led for much of the contest and were within one point of forcing a fourth set, leading 24-19 but the Blue Demons didn’t back down. Four straight kills from Cullen erased the deficit and gave DePaul a 26-24 win and its first league victory of the season. Cullen was the highlight of the offense in the third set, recording 10 kills.
Cullen finished the match with 19 kills with a .317 (19 kills, six errors in 41 attacks) hitting percentage and added 15 digs. She was the only player on either team to record double figure kills. Landschoot dished out 38 assists while Kyndell Highland added 15 digs for the victors.
West Virginia got eight kills from Lisa Hough and 10 digs from Kylie Armbruster.
