Volleyball Beats Memphis 3-1
CHICAGO -- DePaul defeated Memphis 34-32, 30-24, 28-30, 30-27 Saturday evening at the Athletic Center. The Blue Demons improve to 17-6 on the season and move to 8-3 in Conference USA.
DePaul rallied from a 17-10 deficit in game one finishing off Memphis 34-32. The Blue Demons trailed the entire game until evening the score at 27-27. With Memphis ahead 32-21 the Demons rallied scoring the final three points of the game to get the win. Junior Katie Engel led the way for DePaul finishing the game with five kills.
Memphis jumped out to a 21-13 lead in the second game but couldn't hang on as DePaul rallied to win 30-24. The Blue Demons ran off six consecutive points to cut the deficit to 19-21. Memphis held a 24-23 lead, but DePaul finished the game off scoring the final seven points.
After dropping the third game, the Blue Demons came out hot in game four. DePaul jumped out to an early 9-5 lead before Memphis responded with a 9-2 run to take a 14-11 lead. Memphis held a 19-16 lead when DePaul went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. The Tigers rallied to tie the game at 27-27, but the Blue Demons were too tough down the stretch scoring the final three points of the game to close out the match.
Engel finished with 19 kills and 20 digs while hitting a .317. Senior Christa Dirr added 14 kills and senior Kara Jakusz finished with 75 assists.
"We needed a win and we got it tonight," said head coach Dawn Dockstader. "However, we need to execute much better. I wasn't pleased with our serve reception of defensive transition. We have to raise our level of play every where."
The loss drops Memphis to 17-7 on the season and 5-7 in Conference USA.
Next up the Blue Demons host Marquette on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Athletic Center.
