Blue Demons Beat Marquette in Four Games



CHICAGO -- DePaul volleyball defeated rival Marquette 30-28, 31-33, 30-20, 30-17 Wednesday evening at the Athletic Center.  The Blue Demons move to 18-6 on the season and 9-3 in Conference USA.

"This was a great team win tonight," said head coach Dawn Dockstader.  "We controlled the tempo the entire match.  Our offensive performance was tremendous and will carry us into our match against Louisville Friday."

The Blue Demons pulled out game one 30-28.  With the score tied 15-15, DePaul went on a 7-1 run keying the victory.  Marquette closed the gap to 28-27, but the Blue Demons finished the game out scoring the final two points.  Senior Stephanie Bishop led the Demons with six of her match-high 20 kills in the game.

Marquette bounced back to take game two, but DePaul responded with a 30-20 victory in the third game.  Sophomore Janet Cotter sparked the Demons coming off the bench and recording two kills and two digs.  The Blue Demons used an 11-4 run to build a 26-16 lead.  The teams exchanged points the rest of the way with DePaul pulling out the ten-point victory.

DePaul ended the match with a dominating 30-17 victory in game four.  The Blue Demons used four separate 4-0 runs to bury the Golden Eagles.  Senior Melissa Nordine pounded five of her 14 kills in the game to lead the Demons to victory.

Cotter finished the match with six kills, six digs and a .364 hitting percentage while Nordine hit a .440 and added 13 digs.

Dockstader said, "Cotter and I talked about her being physically and mentally prepared to play and she came out on fire tonight.  She did a tremendous job.  Mel (Nordine) was great offensively.  She was very focused and intense during practice this week and it showed tonight."

Senior Mary Anne Flanigan added 14 digs and senior Melissa Murphy compiled 13 digs.  Sophomore Lara Marks provided an offensive spark with 14 kills and a .382 hitting percentage and senior Christa Dirr finished with nine kills and a .360 hitting percentage.

Marquette falls to 15-9 on the season and 7-5 in conference play. 

The Blue Demons will host Louisville on Senior Night at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Athletic Center.
