Volleyball Hosts UAB and USF this Weekend
CHICAGO- The DePaul Blue Demon volleyball squad will open their final home stand on Friday, November 7th against the UAB Blazers. The Blue Demons have three important home matches left; hoping to finish out the regular season strong and receive a good seeding to this years Conference USA tournament.
This weekend’s matches are critical ones in the C-USA race. UAB is 13-14 overall and 5-4 in C-USA, one game away from clinching a tournament berth, while, USF 19-17 overall and 4-5 in C-USA are two games away from clinching their berth. The Blue Demons 11-16 overall and 3-7 in C-USA, are likely to receive an invitation to the tournament, but need to win their last three matches to clinch a berth.
“We control our own destiny,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said. “We have our final three games at home. Each is really important and will determine where we are seeded in the conference tournament.”
Tonight’s match with the Blazers could be a preview of DePaul’s draw in the first round of the C-USA tournament. If the tournament would be held today, DePaul would draw UAB. Last season, in the pair’s only meeting; the Blazers defeated the Blue Demons 3-1.
The Blue Demons come into this weekend after going 1-1 last week defeating TCU in four games, but falling to Houston. Lara Marks dominated on the floor, recording 24 kills and a .275 attack percentage. She also tallied a season and career high 11 total blocks against Houston. On the weekend she stuffed 17 total balls.
Junior Janet Goreham also had stand out performances last weekend, averaging a .339 attack percentage. Goreham notched 26 kills and nine blocks.
The Blazers are coming off a perfect week, defeating Georgia State and USF. Sophomore outside hitter, Lindsay Carnohan led the Blazer offense with 33 kills, 40 points, and five service aces. The defense was led by Breanna Swenson who notched 32 digs.
Saturday’s match against USF is equally important. USF is currently suffering a two-match losing streak with their last win coming against TCU on October 24th. USF is paced by junior middle blocker, Shameka Mitchell. Mitchell averages 4.66 kills and 5.43 points per game. Last week against UAB Mitchell tallied 17 kills and four block assists.
This weekend’s results are sure to shake up the C-USA race. UAB and USF will also face Marquette this weekend.
DePaul, UAB, USF and Marquette are all separated by two matches in the conference race, each win will be crucial when it comes time for the tournament seeding.
The Blue Demons will face the UAB Blazers tonight at 7:00pm at the DePaul Athletic Center. Saturday, November 8th USF will come to the Athletic Center for a 7:00pm match. The regular season will conclude Friday, November 14th when the Blue Demons host Marquette.
