Blue Demons Stumble Against Rutgers

CHICAGO – Aly Zavitz, Morgan Ingersoll and Cristina Correa all finished with double-digit kills, but it was not enough as the Blue Demons dropped a 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 30-2) BIG EAST Conference match to Rutgers Saturday at the DePaul Athletic Center.  Rutgers improves to 11-15, and 6-7 in conference action, while DePaul falls to 4-22, 1-12 conference play.

 

The Scarlet Knight's offense came up big in the three game set and finished with a .328 attack percentage.  Rutgers also had a trio, Lora Yankauskas, and Amanda Meyer and Ashleigh Young finish double-digits kill totals.  Yankauskas lead all players with 15 kills, while Meyer and Young hit over .500 and pitched in 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

 

The Blue Demons hit a match high .256 in the first game, but Rutgers also hit a match high .441.  Tied at seven, Rutgers went on a 7-2 run to grab a 14-9 advantage.  DePaul would cut the lead to two, but the Scarlet Knights momentum was to much to overcome as they won the first set 30-19. 

 

The second game proved to be tightest as there were six lead changes and the score was knotted 15 times.  Tied at 27, the Blue Demons registered three attack errors to allow Rutgers to steal the second frame 30-28. The Blue Demons were led by Zavitz, who finished with seven kills and a .455 attack percentage. 

 

Game three saw Rutgers jump out to a 5-0 lead and never look back, they won the final game 30-20.

 

Zavitz led the Blue Demons with 11 kills, while Ingersoll and Correa each chipped in 10 kills.   Freshman libero Maureen Zigulich lead DePaul's defensive efforts, tallying 11 digs.  Zigulich also registered two kills.

 

The Blue Demons close out the season Sunday hosting Villanova at 2:00 p.m. DePaul will also celebrate Senior Day and honor outside hitter Mandy Moorberg and manager Kyle Sheahan.
