Volleyball Drops Regular Season Finale



CHARLOTTE, NC-  The DePaul volleyball team dropped its regular season finale to Conference USA opponent Charlotte, falling in four games (27-30, 30-22, 30-25, 30-25) Saturday evening at Halton Arena.  The loss drops the Blue Demons to 12-18 overall and 5-8 in C-USA, the 49ers improve to 19-13 and 5-8 in league play.

 

The DePaul tandem of junior Mandy Moorberg and senior Janet Goreham led the Blue Demon offense, combing for 26 of the DePaul's 49 kills.  Moorberg led the attack, compliling 14 putaways, and Goreham added 12. 

 

Defensively, the Blue Demons out blocked the 49ers 14 blocks to their eight.  Goreham led DePaul with three solo blocks and five blocks assists.  Morgan Ingersoll, Amy Holmes, Aly Zavitz, Denae Gibson and Moorberg were all credited with block assists.

 

The Blue Demons were down, 13-15 in game-one, when head coach Dawn Dockstader called her first timeout. Following the time-out DePaul went on a 7-2 run, to a take a 20-17 advantage. During the seven point swing, the Blue Demons capitalized on four 49er errors and Goreham connected on two of the three DePaul kills.  The Blue Demons won game-one, 30-27.

 

Charlotte jumped out to a 10-2 lead in game-two and the Blue Demons were never able to recover, dropping the game 30-22.  Charlotte’s Jessica Oldenburg recorded eight of her match high 23 kills during the game.

 

The Blue Demons found themselves down 9-2 in game-three. DePaul was able to pull within five on a Moorberg kill at 18-23, but it was not enough as the Blue Demons dropped the game, 30-25.

 

DePaul was up 15-13, in game-four, but back-to-back Charlotte kills tied the game at 15 apiece.  Following the tie, the 49ers went on a 10-5 run, building momentum with each point and eventually won the game and match 30-25.

 

Charlotte libero, Holly Kreyling lead all players with 28 digs, while teammate Abbey Szlanfucht followed with 27 digs of her own.  Szlanfucht also added 18 kills and a block assist.

 

The Blue Demons will await the Conference USA Tournament pairings which will be released, Sunday afternoon.  The C-USA Tournament will be held in Louisville, November 19-22.
