Volleyball Opens Tournament Play in New Orleans

CHICAGO - The Blue Demon Volleyball team will have a chance to avenge last Friday’s loss to Marquette in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament.  DePaul the 11th seed will face the number six seed Marquette Friday November 21st at 3:00 p.m. (CST), in New Orleans at the Fogelman Arena.

DePaul 11-19 overall, and 3-10 in conference play, returns to the Tournament after missing the last year’s tournament.  “I am happy to return to the Tournament this year.  The tournament is a chance for a fresh start, our record is wiped clean, it is a new season, “Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said. “In 2001 we came into the tournament as the fifth seed and won the whole tournament.  Our older players know what it takes to win and I am looking for them to lead the team through the tournament”

DePaul opens the Tournament with Marquette on Friday.  The Golden Eagles dominated the Blue Demons in the seasons, only meeting last Friday. Marquette closed out the match in three games.

“Marquette had a flawless performance last week,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said. “We could not get anything going during the first two games.  They took advantage and capitalized on our mistakes throughout the match.  When we finally we able to get some momentum it was too late, and Marquette took the match from us.”

The Blue Demons lost games one and two, but came back from the break ready to make a run.  DePaul came alive in game three. DePaul would go on an 11-4 run pulling within four points, but it was too late, and the Golden Eagles closed out the game and the match 30-24. Janet Cotter knocked down 4 kills and two blocks, while, freshman Morgan Ingersoll added two kills during the run.

“We did not play near our full potential last week.  I am hoping that our upperclassman step up and lead our team to a first round victory,” Dockstader added.

If the Blue Demons win in the first round they will face the number three seed, Southern Miss.  The Golden Eagles earned its highest-ever seeding in the C-USA Tourney, while also posting the most wins in school history with 27 victories.

In this season earlier meeting the Blue Demons lost 3-1.  DePaul knocked down a .300 hitting percentage, while holding Southern Miss to 66 kills and a .292 hitting percentage.  Janet Cotter led the Blue Demon offense tying a previous season high, 21 kills.  Cotter also netted a .425 hitting percentage.  DePaul also saw explosive hitting from sophomore, Mandy Moorberg who tallied 19 kills and junior Amy Holmes who notched 14 kills.

“I am looking for us to perform well at the Tournament,” Dockstader said.  “If we play to our full potential we are capable of competing with any team on the floor.”
