Volleyball's Abbie Fleener Earns All-BIG EAST Honors
Nov. 27, 2013
CHICAGO – Abbie Fleener became the second-ever DePaul volleyball player to be awarded All-BIG EAST honors on Wednesday, as the sophomore right side was named to the conference’s second team.
The winners were chosen by a vote of the league’s head coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
A Grand Rapids, Mich.-native, Fleener was DePaul’s second-leading attacker with 333 kills in 2013. She ranked inside the top-10 in the BIG EAST with 3.06 kills per set and hit .283 while leading DePaul in kills in 10 different matches.
She nearly doubled her kill total from a year ago (159 in 2012, 333 in 2013) and was named the program’s second-ever BIG EAST Player of the Week on September 23. Additionally, Fleener earned a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll spot on October 7 and was named to all-tournament teams at The Citadel Invitational and SIUE Cougar Invitational.
One of only three players to reach the 20-kill mark for DePaul in 2013, she recorded career-high 24 kills on November 11 versus Seton Hall. That number was the sixth-best kill total in the conference this season. Against Creighton and its highly-regarded block, Fleener put together another huge match with 20 kills and a career-best .514 attack percentage.
The conference award marks the second for DePaul after Vesela Zapryanova received second team honors following the 2012 season.
DePaul won its most matches (16) since the 2001 season this past year and will return seven underclassmen, including Fleener, to next year’s roster.
